Betty Little=92s News

 From the = Gables

Many Gables residents contribute to our programs. Recently, = Pat and Bob=20 Fast shared their experiences from two Eldershostels in Florida. They = were=20 excited about the space program featured in one Elderhostel.  One picture in their slide = show, a space=20 rocket with a visitor standing in the foreground, gave us a real = perspective on=20 the  magnitude of these = vehicles.=20 Many were amazed  at the = cost of the=20 space program which is seeking refunding.

Betty Little showed slides, and read poetry about seven = summers at=20 Pawleys Island, S.C. - the shore, the cottages and nearby Brookgreen = Sculpture=20 Gardens. It brought the barrier islands right into the=20 Commons.

Alan Walker, organist for the Union Church of Proctor and = Minister of=20 Music Emeritus, Grace Congregational United Church of Christ plays = classical=20 music every month. Last month, he concluded with waltzes Chopin wrote = while he=20 was living with George Sand and her daughters. Perhaps these delightful = dances=20 were for them.  Chopin = sided with=20 the daughters in arguments with Sand. =20 She simply invited him to leave her house.

Betty Clark retired organist from Trinity Episcopal Church in = Rutland,=20 occasionally plays the piano with David Klock (Wallingford) on the=20 clarinet.  Klock and Clark = are=20 popular. Betty says, =93We are grateful for the chance to play at the = Gables.    =

Sometimes it takes a village,=20 says Betty Little who wrote =93Murdale: A Life and a Ministry=94 from = interviews=20 with Murdale Leysath, about her life as a minister.  Jeff and Carol Freeman, Peter = Hanson,=20 Adrianne Marks and John Little all read drafts of the book.  Cynthia Hanson created the = decorative=20 designs and others provided commentary and support.  In May, seven Gables residents = attended=20 a celebration of  = Murdale=92s ministry=20 at the Sherburne United Church of Christ in  Killington and Connie Kelley = gave the=20 Blessings.  Murdale began as a lay = minister in=20 Sherburne, was ordained there and served many churches in Vermont.=20 She became a Conference Minister in Minnesota, the first woman in the=20 denomination in that position. Murdale and her husband Elwin, a retired=20 forester, lived in Rutland Town and regularly attended Bible Study at = the Gables=20 before moving  to Brandon = to live=20 with their daughter and son-in-law.

Recently, Lillian Billings turned 100. There was a cake with = her picture=20 on it and a pile of birthday cards. =20 She looked lovely with her gray hair and shimmering turquoise = dress. What=20 a role model!
