RUTLAND TOWN SELECTBOARD COMMITTEE MEETING

RECREATION COMMITTEE

TUESDAY, APRIL 26th, 2022

The Recreation Committee of the Rutland Town Selectboard met at 5:00 PM on Tuesday April 26th, 2022, at the Rutland Town Municipal Town Hall. Present was Selectboard Member Sharon Russell, Selectboard Member Mary Ashcroft, Selectboard Member Kurt Hathaway, Recreation Director Mike Rowe, and Administrative Assistant Bill Sweet. There was a conference call line with a publicly accessible phone number in use.

  • Discussed replacing fencing at Dewey Field.
    1. This project has been included on the 5-year Rec plan, and it was projected for this year when the plan was created.
    2. The fencing there is original and has several deficiencies.
    3. A quote was received from Pratico’s Landscaping to replace all the 4’ fencing, approximately 1000’. The new fencing will be black. No poles will be replaced. The quote is a little over $13,000.
    4. There is enough money in the depreciation account to cover the cost.
    5. The committee will recommend this proposal.
  • There is some poison ivy at Dewey Field, Director Rowe is working within the guidelines he has to eliminate those plants.
  • Discussed purchasing a roto-tiller attachment to use at Dewey Field. There is one available for us to purchase for $500. This would eliminate the one we have having to be driven over on the tractor from Northwood Park. The committee will recommend purchasing this.
  • Lifeguards for the upcoming season.
    1. 7 lifeguards will be re-hired, and 5 new hires are planned.
    2. The starting rate will be $14 per hour, with an increasing scale for position and tenure.
  • The seat on the zero-turn is worn out.
    1. A new seat is approximately $2000.
    2. When it comes time to sell the mower, it would be removed, and the old one put back on. This seat would be used for a future mower.
    3. The committee will recommend purchasing this.
  • The fencing at Northwood Park for the pickle ball courts has been completed. We are waiting for the vendor who does the striping to be able to get to us. The cost for striping is included in the money allocated for park improvements.
  • Discussed adding the last 9 holes to the disc golf course. It would be approximately $3500 for the remaining baskets needed.
    1. The course is being used consistently.
    2. The plan for the next 9 holes has already been completed.
    3. The committee will recommend purchasing the necessary items.
  • Mowing is starting soon.
  • Many people are using the park daily for walking. There are several with dogs. Reminded everyone that leashes are required to be used.
  • Discussed allowing horses in the park.
    1. This was brought up earlier after a request was made.
    2. After some discussion, our park is not appropriate for horses to be ridden in.
  • Discussed plans for a Town Wide Celebration this year.
    1. August 20th and 27th were discussed as possible dates.
    2. The pool is typically closed by the 27th. This is dependent on the availability of lifeguards.
    3. It is agreed that the pool is a big draw.
    4. This would be a great way to end the season at the pool.
    5. After some discussion, August 27th was picked as the date for the event.
    6. There were a variety of events proposed. The Town Wide Celebration committee will meet again soon to discuss details.

The meeting adjourned at 5:43 PM.

Respectfully submitted, Bill Sweet
