RUTLAND TOWN SELECTBOARD COMMITTEE MEETING
POLICE COMMITTEE
NOVEMBER 18th, 2024
The Police Committee of the Rutland Town Selectboard met at 4:00 PM on Monday November 18th, 2024, at the Municipal Town Hall. Present was Selectboard Chair Mary Ashcroft, Selectboard Member Matt Getty, Police Chief Ed Dumas and Deputy Police Chief Ted Washburn.
The Committee discussed possible vacancy savings from the School Resource Officer position which may be used to purchase the aphis fingerprint machine.
- Reviewed salary and benefit expenses planned for the current year, with the SRO leaving, and a new officer being hired.
- The cost of the fingerprint machine is $18,500. The printer is an additional $1325.
- There is an annual maintenance cost of $2806 for the machine and $199 for the printer.
- There is approximately $10200 in vacancy savings related to the SRO position.
- Insurance costs are expected to increase at the start of the calendar year. This additional expense is projected at $4034, and was not included in the budget.
- There are additional savings from the new officer position since he was not hired until recently.
- The total estimated savings were calculated to be $43436.
- The current lead time for the fingerprint machine is 60 days after receipt.
- The committee agreed there should be sufficient funds from savings in the current fiscal year budget for purchase of $22830 and will make the recommendation to the full board.
- There are annual costs which will need to be included in future budgets.
The committee discussed budget planning for the next fiscal year.
- There was a review of expenses to budget for the current fiscal year.
- The taser contract needs to be renewed. The total is $8309 annually for 5 years.
- The total equipment line is projected at $26,310, which includes the aphis costs.
- The committee discussed needs for the coming year.
- A budget was drafted, but is not yet done.
The committee is recommending an increase in the SRO salary of $2500. There are savings in training since the officer candidate is already level 3 certified.
A follow-up meeting is planned for Monday November 25th at 4PM.
The meeting adjourned at 5:01PM.
