RUTLAND TOWN SELECT BOARD COMMITTEE MEETING

POLICE COMMITTEE

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 6th, 2023

The Police Committee of the Rutland Town Select Board met at 4:00 PM on Wednesday December 6th, 2023, at the Municipal Town Hall. Present was Select Board Chair Mary Ashcroft, Select Board Member Matt Getty, Town Police Chief Ed Dumas, Town Deputy Police Chief Ted Washburn, and Town Second Constable John Paul Faignant.

  1. Discussed the proposed budget for the next fiscal year and the funds received from the Cortina Inn.
    • The fund balance from the Cortina Inn funds as of June 30th, 2023, is $182,253.
    • Discussed how to account for the directed patrol expenses, and the calculations for the expenses related to work on the South end of Town.
    • The cost of hiring a new officer was discussed. The committee is in favor of it but more discussion on funding is needed. A full-time level 3 officer is preferred over part time.
    • Discussed current hourly rates for new and current employees, and how they relate to other departments. An additional adjustment above the raises to our 1st officers salary will be proposed.
    • Discussed increasing the training budget to allow for anticipated officer development. No decision was made.
    • Discussed funding a sign on bonus for a new officer. No decision was made.
    • Discussed having an additional full board budget meeting for the police budget separate from the one planned on December 11th. No decision was made.

The meeting adjourned at 5:30 PM.
